Season 2009 - 2010

League Match

12-December-2009: Horrabridge Rangers 8 - Hooe Rovers 2

In a bright morning at Fillace Park, Horrabridge were looking to keep up their winning streak in the return match against Hooe Rovers. They started brightly but allowed Hooe to press them leading to an early corner for the visitors. As a result of the corner, the ball whizzed across the goal only for a Horrabridge defender to force it into his own net. They did not let this early setback affect them and had a number of breaks and attacks well covered by the Hooe goalkeeper. The ball broke free during one of these attacks and Bradley Johns found himself in the right position to cool slot the ball home for his first goal for the club.

Josh Broughton started this game 6 goals short of his 100 for the club. He was 'Hot Shot' of the week in the local paper for his hall of 5 in the previous match and was keen to make it to the 100 mark in this game. He made some well timed runs down the left flank only to be thrwarted by the post and goalkeeper. It was Hooe that scored to again take the lead though. An attack had led to a corner that was swung in, and nodded home with the Horrabridge defence looking on giving Hooe an early and deserved 2 -1 lead. Horrabridge stepped up a gear and after some good interplay and distribution by Martin Hoar in the centre of Midfield timed a pass to Josh Broughton who opened up his account with a cool finish. With a few minutes to go to half time, it was Horrabridge who were finishing the stronger of the teams. A couple of tactical substitutions saw Soloman Cox and Sam Grindell joining the action and the too neatly linked up with a cross onto Soloman's head almost leading to a goal to take the lead but again the Hooe keeper was up to the challenge with an exellent save. In another attack after a challenge in midfield by Robert Pearce set up a ball over the top from Jordan Eales to Josh Broughton who's defender slipped giving him plenty of time to score his 2nd of the game and give Horrabridge the lead at half time.

At the start of the second half Hooe seemed to have not got up to speed and Horrabridge quickly went another goal up with Josh again picking up a through ball from Jordan on the left. After this goal, Hooe started to provide a more firm defense and for a while Horrabridge were failing to put them to bed but normal service was soon resumed with Josh getting his 4th goal. Soloman Cox had been having a quite game by his standards but got himself in a good position to prod home Horrabridge's next goal. This ended up being his last kick of the game as he made way for Tom Williams to come back into attack with the manager thinking of the next match against Looe and looking to preserve certain players. Other than the set pieces, the Horrabridge defense was firm and in control with excellent performances from Goalkeeper Dan Timmins, making his 100th appearance at this game, Adam Cowen King, Josh Bainbridge, Jack Harrison and Jon Brimble but one of them had to make way for a debut by Kieran Johnson who now slotted into the right back position with Jon Brimble moving to left back for the remainder of the game.

With about 12 minutes left on the clock Josh Broughton was still short of his aim of scoring 6 to reach his 100 goals for the club. Some good battling work on the left by Jordan Eales again got the ball to Josh but with a narrow angle, he cut the ball back only for the shot to be narrowly missed. By this stage Hooe just wanted to get home and it showed as Horrabridge were seeing the majority of the ball, some good work by Sam Grindell on the right wing played Josh in for his 5th goal. Rob Pearce burst through from midfield only to be denied by the Hooe Keeper and their Man of the Match. Finally, Josh found himself with a chance to put away his 6th in the match and 100th of all time in league and cup for Horrabridge. He did this in his usual manor with the cheers and adoration of the players and supporters ringing in his ears. When the final whistle went, Horrabridge had run out easy 8-2 winners in the end but they will need to improve against Looe in the next game if they are to keep their winning streak going.

Dan Timmins was presented with a certificate marking his 100 caps for the team and Josh Broughton was congratulated for reaching his 100th goal. The Press were taking photographs of the presentation so hopefully these will be available from the photographer. The team were very proud of their performance and the result. Martin Hoar who was the Captain for the game was also the Horrabridge Man of the Match and Josh Bainbridge deserved the 110% player award.

League Match

28-November-2009: Horrabridge Rangers 6 - Tavistock Thistles 4

In one of the only games played on this day, Horrabridge ran out winners against a passionate Tavistock team who were glad to get a game in after a long lay off. Horrabridge started the brightest without really making an impression until Josh Broughton found a space in behind the Tavistock defence to slot home the first of 5 goals. Rather than settling down and pushing on, Horrabridge now seemed lethargic having not played for 4 weeks and some good play by Tavistock saw them draw level with ex Horrabridge players Bradley Barbour and Will Hall combining well on the left. Horrabridge continued to struggle to find their passing range in heavy conditions but were unlucky to not get a penalty. They finally got another break with Broughton slotting home his second. Tavistock were far from out of it and a tactical change from them pushed the team on to score a second goal leaving the score at 2 each at half time.

After a serious team talk and some tactical adjustment to the positions and formation Horrabridge started the second half with more focus. Horrabridge scored 2 more goals in quick succession with Brougton getting his third and a few miniutes later with break from the Horrabridge midfield which saw man of the match Robert Pearce burst into the box to put away a poor clearance to give Horrabridge a 2 goal cushion. Tavistock pressed though and with the Horrabridge struggling to clear the ball from their 18 yard box, it was played back to Oliver Scanlan who cracked home Tavistock's third goal and bring them back into the game.

Although Horrabridge had been having more shots than Tavistock, the Tavi Keeper was doing really well making some excellent saves during the match, however, a mistake by a Tavistock defender as he ushered the ball away with his hand meant that Horrabridge had a penalty with 10 mins left in the game. The penalty was not struck well with the ball wet and muddy from the conditions and the keeper gratefully clutched the ball without having to dive. Tavistock then had a chance to draw level straight afterwardswith a shot that was looping into the top of the net when Dan Timmins got a hand to it an pushed the ball over the bar. This proved to be decisive as Jordan Eales broke from the resulting corner laid the ball accross to Kieran Alford who dribbled the ball along the byline and pulled it back for Broughton to pick up his 4th goal.

The game still did no look over until Josh Broughton scored a clinical goal under the diving Tavistock keeper after a fantastic run in from the left wing. Tavistock got a late consolation goal after confusion in the Horrabridge defence on a corner saw Josh Bainbridge miss-time a header which ended up glancing off his head into the Horrabridge net.

Horrabridge deserved the win in the end but rode their luck at times and will have to raise their game for the next match. They now sit only 2 points behind the team in 6th place in the league. Josh Broughton is now only 6 goals away from scoring 100 for the club in all competions. We have a policy of inclusion for all and building the understanding of team play with the focus on enjoying football.

League Match

31-October-2009: Hooe Rovers 2 - Horrabridge Rangers 10

Hooe could not repeat their performance of last week after being hit hard in the first half with Horrabridge going in 7-0 up at half time. Horrabridge won the toss and elected to play up the slope and with the wind behind them. This decision paid off with 2 early goals that took the wind out of Hooe's sails. Horrabridge continued to press and the goals continued to come with some great interlinking. Defender Josh Bainbridge scored a peach of a goal from one of the corners taken superbly by Martin Hoar running in to power a header home. It was not totally one way but the Horrabridge keeper had little to do in the first 40 minutes as the defence proved firm and unyealding. At the end of the first half, the Hooe keeper did really well to parry a shot that was cleared by the defence but Martin Hoar saw the keeper off his line and slotted the ball home from 45 yards out. Horrabridge had 2 new players making their debut from the substitutes bench and they came on just before the end of the first half.

At the start of the second half Hooe had the advantage of the wind but had to battle up the hill. They started to get more into the game and set up a good goal to pull it back to 7-1. Horrabridge were affected by the change of shape from the substitutions but still had control of the game again setting things up for Josh Broughton to score his hatrick. To their credit Hooe did not let their heads drop and were rewarded when a mistake at the back let their striker score another consolation goal. Having had a rest, Robert Pearce came back on in midfield and was rewarded by a clicnical strike and goal that had been coming for a long time and was celebrated by the whole team. Horrabridge scored their 10th goal with some good attacking play and an accurate cross from Kieran Alford to set up Martin Hoar for his second with a fantastic volley into the open net. The Horrabridge Captain for the match Jon Brimble got the 110% award for effort and Jordan Eales got the man of the match. Horrabridge goal scorers were Josh Broughton 3, Josh Bainbridge 2, Martin Hoar 2, Kieran Alford 1, Robert Pearce 1 and Soloman Cox 1. Man of the Match for Hooe Rovers was Bobby Cockram but special mention was made for their keeper who pulled off many goal stopping saves.

Horrabridge were glad to get off the mark in the league and will look to build on this in their next game against Morley Rangers. The Horrabridge Manager said: "I was pleased with the performance today especially with 6 boys getting on the scoresheet and a good debut from the new lads who came off the bench, we need to work hard in training to build up some momentum in the league now."

League Match

Horrabridge Rangers U15s .... 5 v 7..... Activate

Horrabridge started the game with only 9 men due to a kick-off time mixup. A tenth player arrived after a couple of minutes and Horrabridge took the lead. Activate equalised only for Horrabridge to score again. Finally Horrabridge got up to 11 players on the pitch but some mistakes let Activate in to score 2 more goals before half-time. Jordan Eales had stood in as Goalkeeper for the first half and should be commended by a number of good saves. In the second Half Horrabridge came out fighting and quickly scored to reduce the deficit to 1, Activate scored again before a brace of goals from Josh Broughton brought the scores level at 5-5. The game looked like it could go either way when again Activate found some space and scored 2 goals in quick succession to kill off any chance of victory.

Horrabridge Scorers were Soloman Cox 2, Josh Bainbridge 1 and Josh Broughton 2. The Man of the match was stand-in goalkeeper, Chris Argles and 110% player Josh Bainbridge.

League Match

Horrabridge Rangers U15s .... 4 v 7..... Saltash United Juniors

Horrabridge paid the price for missing 2 boys from last weeks game as the had to re-adjust to new positions. They found it a challenge to keep in touch with Saltash and found their touch a little off. In the first half Saltash scored 4 times but there was a glimmer of hope with a cracking strike from Tom Williams and an excellent finish from Josh Broughton to leave the score at 4 -2 at half time. In the second half it could have gone either way but a penalty to Saltash gave them the gap that they never looked back from. A response fron Horrabridge direct from the corner by Martin Hoar looked to keep Horrabridge in it when 2 further goals in quick succession from Saltash finished things off. A final goal from Josh Broughton was some consolation on his birthday but the team will have to regain some of the confidence from last week when they face Activate again, this time in the league.

Cup Match
Horrabridge Rangers U15s ….5 v 3…. Activate U15s
(after extra time)

In a fantastic game at Fillace Park, Horrabridge edged an eight-goal thriller in the first round of The Royal Oak Cup. Having won only one game last season as the U14s and having never won a cup match, Horrabridge started the match with some trepidation. They were fielding their reserve keeper, Chris Argles, but he proved up to the challenge as did the rest of the team.

In the first half, Activate put Horrabridge under pressure but the defence remained strong with Jack Harrison and Josh Bainbridge stemming the tide. Horrabridge were always a threat on the break and on one such occasion, Josh Broughton seemed to be fouled by the Activate keeper but kept his feet only to be defeated by the narrow angle.

Activate scored first when they slotted home a rebound from the post, following a corner. Just before half time, Kieran Alford judged the weight and timing of his pass perfectly through the Activate defence. Josh Broughton’s pace ensured he reached the ball before the onrushing keeper and he drove it into the net for Horrabridge’s equaliser.

In the second half, Activate cleverly exploited a gap to take the lead. Captain Adam Cowan-King continually encouraged his team to battle for every ball and Horrabridge were soon back on level terms when the Activate keeper could only parry a Josh Broughton shot to Kieran Alford who coolly side footed the ball into the net.

Activate came back to regain the lead when their number 7 found some space on the left wing, cut in and blasted the ball past Chris Argles.
Just when it seemed Activate would progress into the second round of the cup, Martin Hoar ran onto an Activate clearance and cracked a brilliant 30 yard shot into the top corner of the net.
In the first half of extra time, Activate dominated, but Horrabridge defence stayed strong and were ably supported by midfielders Jordan Eales and Rob Pearce, who had one of his best games in a Horrabridge shirt.

In the second period of extra time, Martin Hoar sent a crossfield ball to the feet of Josh Broughton on the left wing. He outpaced four defenders before passing the ball into the net. Horrabridge weren’t finished. A move again involving Martin Hoar and Josh Broughton left Kieran Alford with the simple task of placing the ball in the net to seal a fine win. Adam Cowan-King was man of the match.

It was fitting victory for one proud Horrabridge player, Jon Brimble, who received a certificate to celebrate his 100th game for the club. The team are looking forward now with expectation to their next league game against Saltash.

MATCH REPORTS

Match Report: Horrabridge Rangers v Tavistock Thistles: 2 - 5

Horrabridge paid the price for only having 9 boys in the team due to half term commitments. They kept Tavistock honest throughout the first half, scoring first to take the lead and then keeping the score to close going to 2 each before Tavistock pushed into the lead just before the break.

Tavistock had a full team with sub and in the second half were able to use the extra numbers to push on. Horrabridge never gave up and all of the players played at the top of their game: Josh Broughton (Man of the Match and scorer of the second goal), Tom Williams (Covering out of position in defence and assisting in the second goal for Horrabridge), Solly Cox (Pace and Power and scoring the first goal), Robert Pearce (110% award - solid work in midfield with breaks and telling passes and tackles) Jon Brimble and Jack Harrison (solid defending often being out numbered, telling clearances, Jack's throws, corners and free Kicks were all out of the top drawer), Chris Argles (Captain incredible who worked tirelessly for the team and battled to the end), Dan Timmins, ( top performance - telling saves and good distrubution/awareness), Oliver Watt (unlucky again not to score but involved in a lot of the Horrabridge attacks and often back straight away helping defend)

Match Report: Saturday 4 October Away V Hooe Rovers.

Both teams went into the game looking for their first win of the season and both left with honors even in a wind and rain swept 4-4 draw. Horrabridge started the game the liveliest with 2 goals in the first 10 minutes to Josh Broughton. Horrabridge almost went 3 up but for a fine save from the Hooe Keeper. The goal keeper's heroics seemed to spur on the home side as they pulled a goal back in the first half sending their side in with a 1 goal deficit at half time.

In the second half, Horrabridge had to play into the wind which had risen to the extent where a punt up field from Hooe flew towards the goal and the bounce caught the goalkeeper off his line to level things. Horrabridge again took the lead with a goal from Josh Bainbridge before 2 goals from Hooe changed things around. An injury to the Horrabridge keeper meant changing the team formation and putting Chris Argles into goal as replacement. Horrabridge survived a couple of forays into their area before some neat work in midfield took them to the Hooe byline and a whipped cross was inches away from being turned into the net. Finally the pressure paid off when a foul about 30 yard out gave Horrabridge a free kick. Kyran Davies floated a wonderful ball in but Hooe managed to clear the ball for a corner. The corner was then whipped in by Kyran's left foot finding the head of Josh Bainbridge who completed a brace on his debut. 1 minute later the final whistle was blown with both teams satisfied with the draw in difficult conditions.

MATCH REPORTS

Match Report. (D.J.M. LEAGUE. U13'S ( SCOTT ))

Horrabridge Rangers U13 boys versus Woolwell FC Fillace Park 11am Saturday 5 April

Final Score 5 - 2

Starting the game 5 places in the league behind Woolwell, Horrabridge went into the game disadvantaged by only having 10 players. A changed lineup saw them play with 3 in defence. The game started brightly and the Horrabridge put extra effort in from the start to make up for being a player down. A few early forays into the Woolwell half came to nothing when some excellent play from Woolwell put them a goal up. Rather than letting their heads drop, Horrabridge stepped up a gear and started to pass the ball around, Woolwell pushed on to get a second early goal but Horrabridge caught them on the counter attack with Josh Broughton slotting home after a one on one with the keeper. With parity returned the frst have continued in a fairly even fashion with both defenses playing well. Just before half time Woolwell got a chance when the Horrabridge keeper slid outside the 18yrd box to catch the ball and gave away a free kick. Most boys were expecting a cross but Woolwell went straight for goal and all the Horrabridge keeper Chris Argles could do is parry the ball into the net. Woolwell went in 2-1 up and looked confident that they would improve in the second half to kill the game off. When they returned to the pitch, they changed formation in order to put more pressure on the 3 defenders. After the kick off the Horrabridge had to weather some headdy pressure but with only the 3 at the back found it easier to play the offside trap. Some telling tackles from the defenders Jon Brimble, Conor Phelan and Samual Lloyd meant that the Woolwell attack were often frutrated. When Woolwell did get through, they found a keeper on top form making some telling saves. After weathering the early storm, Horrabridge counter attacked and again Broughton found himself with only the keeper to beat, seeing him advancing off his line, he chiped the ball over the keepers head and into the back of the net to equalise with a sublime effort. Woolwell started to tire and the Horrabrige midfield started to win more balls and make the more incisive moves finally setting up Josh for his hatrick. The more Woolwell pushed the more space Horrabridge found in behind their defence and rather than Woolwell getting another goal, Horrabridge scored 2 more one by Max Burgess and the final goal put away by Will Hall. Man of the Match was awarded to Chris Argles in the Horrabridge goal but all the team played at 110%.

The win sees Horrabridge climb 2 places to 9th.

08-Sep: Hooe 5 - Horrabridge 5 - A 10 goal thriller kicked off the season for both teams with the lead swapping one way and then the other throughout the match. The Hooe Goalkeeper pulled off a number of top notch saves and the upright stopped Horrabridge from taking a early lead twice in the first half. It was 1 each at half time and Horrabridge took an early advantage in the second half. A goaline clearance saved Hooe from going futher behind and within minutes they had scored at the other end of the pitch and followed up to take a 5-4 lead. Another goal from the Horrabridge made it 5 a piece and it stayed that way until the final whistle.

28-Apr: Horrabridge draw 5-5 against the Warspite U12 league champions Looe. After falling 4-1 down early in the second half, horrabridge showed there fittness and determination by fighting back to 5 a piece by the end of the game. A first half goal from Oliver had cancelled the early lead of Looe, but after a mix up at a throw in, Horrabridge conceeded another goal just before the half time. In the second half, top scorer Josh made way for Will. Goals from Looe followed and it looked like it was not going to be Rangers day when goals from Will and a top corner strike from Max made the match more interesting. Looe conceded a free Kick to the left of the box and Ryan placed the resultant free kick beyond the Looe keeper. The score being 5-4 against Horrabridge, the Manager put on the last substitute Jon who after confusion almost scored with his first touch but the ball droped just right for Will to tap home his second and the equalizer to a fantanstic match. A positive finish to the season and although promotion was not acheived, Horrabridge can be proud to be the best of the rest.

26-Apr: Horrabridge win 4-0 away to Plympton on a wet spring day. They started with a solid display without making progress in the final 3rd of the pitch until they scored a goal before half time.
